LTE: U.S. Senate: Don't trust Smiley on abortion

Watching the debate between Sen. Patty Murray and challenger Tiffany Smiley, I was struck by a phrase which seems to have become a major talking point for Republicans: that the Democratic candidates “support abortion up to the moment of childbirth!” How anyone could miss the absurdity of this floors me. Nobody does this. Do they expect us to believe that any woman would carry a pregnancy up to labor and then capriciously decide that they will abort rather than deliver?

When pregnancies are terminated in the third trimester, it is because it has been determined that the fetus will not survive pregnancy or birth. When the pregnancy is obviously not going to yield survival through delivery, then the parents have to gather whatever loved ones they want to include in the plan and decide whether they want to continue with “carry to bury” or to humanely terminate a non-viable pregnancy. This should only ever be their decision. Nobody wants a politician to join them in the exam room to help make this choice. I find it revolting that Smiley thinks that anything about this should be up to her.

We need to call them out. Sen. Murray would never even put this on the table. Smiley says that she respects the views of the people of this state. Seems like we heard from the recent Supreme Court nominees that they would, too. Guess not. Which candidate will truly support freedom for women to make their own choices? Read between the lines. It’s not the GOP candidate.

to distract from having people rationally consider complicated issues. These are the same people who were too craven to fully support masking and vaccines during the pandemic. "Every life matters--until you're born."
