Kirkland Sewer Main Break Closes Juanita Beach

KIRKLAND, WA — A broken sewer main upstream from Juanita Creek spurred a precautionary closure of Juanita Beach Wednesday. City officials said the break happened in the afternoon at 132nd Avenue Northeast and Northeast 116th Street, drawing crews from Kirkland Public Works, the Northshore Utility District and the Washington State Department of Transportation to the site.

In a news release, officials said Juanita Beach would remain closed until the city's Storm and Surface Water Division could collect and test water samples to verify safety. The beach will reopen once tests indicate bacteria are in the safe range.

Until then, the city urges all people and pets to avoid contact with Lake Washington in the area, including swimming and drinking the water.

Updates about the beach closure will be posted on the city's website.
