Woodland Park Zoo's newest grizzly bear officially has a name

The newest grizzly bear cub at Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo officially has a name.

The zoo said the female cub was named Fern by Maryanne Tagney and David Jones, who are longtime supporters of Woodland Park Zoo's conservation efforts.

"We were honored to be asked to name little Fern, the zoo’s adorable new rescued grizzly cub! She is a living and breathing example of the critical wildlife conservation work that we have been supporting since the zoo first created the Living Northwest Conservation Program,” said Tagney.

Visitors will soon get to meet Fern at Woodland Park Zoo’s Living Northwest Trail.

Hoping it might be re-homed to a sanctuary. hlthe2b Nov 2022 #3
They should give them human names IMO. hlthe2b Nov 2022 #2
Tell that to my Aunt Fern. nt eppur_se_muova Nov 2022 #4
LOL. Is she human? hlthe2b Nov 2022 #5
Definitely. Actually, I cheated a bit. It's Ferne, not Fern. eppur_se_muova Nov 2022 #6

A beautiful bear in a tiny enclosure. Grizzly bears can cover 30 miles in a few hours and their ranges are usually something in the area of 50 to 200 miles squared. So seeing this youngster in this tiny place is just gut wrenching.

If it were male, he'd look like a "Clyde" to me. Given she's female, Clementine.

Their faces always tell me their names. Fern? Doesn't say much to me.

NOT a common name, but it's out there. It was surprisingly popular between 1890 and 1925.
