Permanent supportive housing is the answer to Seattle's housing crisis

If you live or work in Seattle, chances are you know our homelessness crisis all too well. Simply walk a few blocks through downtown and you will pass neighbors subsisting in the cold and wet, sometimes living in tents or sleeping in doorways. In fact, more than 13,000 people will sleep outside each night in King County.

Too often, unhoused people are blamed for the homelessness crisis. Yet research shows that most unhoused people have experienced complex childhood trauma — a disruptor that can alter DNA and brain functioning and impair or prevent a person from developing the tools they need to thrive. In addition, structural forces such as institutional racism and lack of generational wealth leave Black, Indigenous and other historically marginalized groups at greater risk of experiencing homelessness.

Thankfully, there is something very simple yet incredibly powerful each one of us can do. Take action to solve the homelessness crisis by supporting Proposition 1, the Seattle housing levy renewal on this year's ballot.

A lack of affordable housing is the No. 1 reason people experience homelessness. If passed, this levy will raise $970 million to create more housing options that will prevent more people from becoming unhoused.
