Johnson leads Fortney in hotly contested Snohomish County sheriff’s race

EVERETT — Longtime Snohomish County cop Susanna Johnson was leading incumbent Sheriff Adam Fortney in a tight, contentious race for the county’s top law enforcement position in early returns Tuesday.

Johnson, the deputy police chief in Bothell, had 52.25% in the first drop of ballots.

“I’m feeling very excited for sure, cautiously optimistic, I think is the words I should probably use,” Johnson said Tuesday.

She said the mood in her camp was “high energy” throughout the night and touted the more than 175 volunteers aiding her bid. She said they had knocked on over 25,000 doors.
