Mayor Harrell's far-reaching building performance plan up for council review
The proposed building emissions legislation that Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell sent to the City Council on Wednesday has one less critic than five months ago when he unveiled it.
Climate justice nonprofit 350 Seattle had said it was concerned that too many concessions had been made to large commercial real estate owners. That concern has morphed into support.
350 Seattle is excited to see the Building Emissions Performance Standard Policy (BEPS) up for a vote next month, group Executive Director Shemona Morena said in a news release that Harrell's office issued Wednesday. She encouraged council members to vote yes.

Burning fossil fuels like gas and oil to heat air and water and cook causes a third of Seattle's climate pollution, according to the city, which said BEPS would reduce greenhouse gas emissions from existing large buildings by approximately 325,000 metric tons by 2050. That's a 27% decrease in emissions from a 2008 baseline.
