As mass transit systems flounder, here's how Seattle compares

Public transit systems across the nation took a big hit during the pandemic, and many are still struggling with passenger counts that lag significantly behind their 2019 levels.

Seattle is one of only eight U.S. metros with over 100 million annual passenger trips this year, but area transit agencies remain hard hit by declines in ridership.

Local and state agencies serving the Seattle area tallied 101.7 million passenger trips through August and are expected to finish the year with 152.6 million passenger trips. That's a 32% drop from 2019, when ridership totaled 225 million.

That's according to the latest ridership data from the Federal Transit Administration, which found national transit ridership is down 30% in 2023 compared to 2019.
