Despite the arguments, poll says most people support $15 minimum wage in Seattle

People in this city are divided on minimum wage – or at least it looked that way at Tuesday night’s Seattle City Council public forum. A new poll says otherwise.

Hundreds of people showed up at Rainier Beach High School to tell council members what they think of Mayor Ed Murray’s proposal to gradually raise the citywide minimum wage to $15 an hour. Those attending were evenly split on the issue, but according to an EMC Research poll released the same night, more people than ever are supporting the minimum wage increase.

Almost three-quarters of 550 people surveyed this month said they approved of a $15 minimum wage, up from 68 percent in January. About two-thirds of the people surveyed say they support the mayor’s proposal.

Most voters support a phase-in for small business; about one-third think there should be a phase-in for large businesses as well. Murray’s proposal puts the line between small and large businesses at 500 employees.
