Scarecrow Video secures permanent home in University District

In a move it describes as “securing its place in Seattle’s cultural landscape,” the owners of the Scarecrow Video have purchased their longtime home in the University District.

Purchase price for the approximately 5,700-square-foot building at 5030 Roosevelt Way NE was $5.58 million.

Just a year ago, the video rental outlet — founded in Seattle in 1988 in the Latona neighborhood — was in danger of permanent closure. In 2024, the organization launched the S.O.S. (Save Our Scarecrow) fundraising campaign, raising $1.8 million to sustain operations and employees.

“We still have a long fundraising road ahead of us,” Scarecrow Board President Lacey Leavitt Gray said. “For today, I’m thrilled that now we can do it from a place of security.”
