Officials opening 2 lanes of SB I-5 Wednesday evening

Transportation officials say they will reopen two lanes of southbound I-5 around 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Two left lanes will open while the right lane continues to receive repairs over night. The speed limit through the area around DuPont will be 45 mph. Officials hope to open all lanes by Thursday morning.

The news came just hours after representatives of the Washington State Patrol and the Washington State Department of Transportation said that the freeway would not open for up to several days. The Amtrak locomotive that derailed and fell onto I-5 Monday was cleared from the freeway Wednesday morning. There’s still a lot of work left to clear the road, but so far officials are breathing a sigh of relief after initial reports of the freeway’s condition.

“Remarkably, the roadway as we can see it now — there is still a lot of dirt and heavy equipment — as of now it looks like it held up pretty well,” said Captain Dave Hall with the Washington State Patrol. “We are happy so far with what we are seeing.”
