A Democrat, Issaquah pediatrician Dr. Kim Schrier, has become the second candidate to top $1 million raised in the wide open, nationally watched 8th District U.S. House race.
Schrier must face other Democrats in the August primary, however, while the first candidate past the $1 million mark -- Republican Dino Rossi -- has a clear field on his side of the political fence. They are running to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert, R-Wash.
Schrier has used a series of benchmarks, such as endorsements from the Boeing Aerospace Machinists and the EMILY's list fundraising network, to argue that Democrats should coalesce behind her candidacy.
"Reaching $1 million is a sign that people are ready for a representative who truly understands and will fight for our community," Schrier said Monday.
But she has quality competition.
Issaquah attorney Jason Ritterheiser has grown in the campaign, and is emerging as the kind of blue collar farmer-labor Democrat who used to populate the party. Late entry Dr. Shannon Hader, former director of HIV/AIDS programs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, gets passionate on such issues as opioid response beyond urban areas.
The voters may have to tune in politics for an August 7th primary, at a time of year when the Northwest tunes out politics.
Rossi is following in footsteps of his past races for Governor and U.S. Senate. He depicts himself as a problem solver, stays on message, and bats off Democrats' efforts to define him.
Rossi has reached into the NFL Hall of Fame for an upcoming April 20th breakfast fundraiser, bringing in onetime (1976-89) Seattle Seahawks' wide receiver Steve Largent.
