Skyscraper planned where Showbox operates near Pike Place Market

A Canadian real estate developer plans to build a 44-story mixed-use multifamily tower where the Showbox night club operates across First Avenue from Pike Place Market.

The notice was posted on the city's website Tuesday, 79 years to the day that the historic club opened. Performers from Duke Ellington and burlesque queen Gypsy Rose Lee to Pearl Jam and the duo of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have performed there over the years.

The Onni Group of Vancouver, British Columbia, is proposing the tower, the latest in a string of skyscrapers in the neighborhood. The building would have approximately 442 apartment units, ground-level retail and 88 stalls of underground parking, according to the land-use pre-application submitted to the city.

The tower would rise where the storied ballroom sits and on the adjacent surface parking lot, according to a site plan marked Onni Showbox. Architecture firm Perkins + Will's name is on the plan.

Onni officials have not yet responded to an email inquiry that the Business Journal sent Wednesday morning.
