The central Washington farm that grows half of the cherries the state ships to China plans to export 1 million fewer boxes as a result of President Donald Trump's trade war and Tuesday's $12 billion federal bailout for farmers will barely make a dent in the loss.
That's because one of the major programs the United States Department of Agriculture unveiled this week to help farms targets producers of select crops and livestock such as soybeans, dairy and hogs. Washington fruit growers are not eligible, Northwest Horticulture Commission President Mark Powers said.
The two remaining programs the food purchase and distribution program, which purchases food from farmers for food banks, and the trade promotion program that will help market farm products internationally are unlikely to generate enough opportunity for Washington growers to offset the losses, he said.
"We are seeing 15 years of hard work circling the drain as it relates to China," Washington State Fruit Commission President B.J. Thurlby said.
