Bloomberg pledges $1 million to back carbon fee initiative

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has pledged $1 million to support Initiative 1631, the carbon fee measure on Washington's November ballot that oil companies are fighting with a $21 million war chest.

The announcement came Tuesday night, on the same day that Bloomberg, a former Republican, committed $20 million to helping Democrats recapture the U.S. Senate.

The billionaire Bloomberg is pondering a run for the White House in 2020.

"Cities and states are continuing to lead where Congress and the White House won't," Bloomberg tweeted. "Tonight I'm glad to announce I will pledge $1 million to support a state ballot initiative, led by Gov. Jay Inslee, that places a price on carbon."
