Cathy McMorris Rodgers: House GOP leader challenged at home
WALLA WALLA -- Democratic U.S. House candidate Lisa Brown has often mused at a quip from the Indigo Girls during her academic and legislative career: "Every five years or so I look back on my life and have a good laugh."
"Five years ago, I was leaving the legislature and embarking on a new challenge at WSU: I did not think I would be doing this," Brown said Wednesday at a women's luncheon of the Walla Walla Valley Chamber of Commerce.
She is taking on U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., a member of the House Republican leadership, and the public face of Trump administration policies -- particularly its tax cut -- in Washington.
The result is a barn burner of a congressional race, but without quite the scorched earth seen elsewhere in the country. McMorris and Brown held their fourth and final debate this week in Walla Walla, televised nationally on C-SPAN.
Both candidates are well known. McMorris Rodgers has been in Congress for 14 years. Brown was State Senate Majority Leader in Olympia, and helped get Wazzu a new medical school as chancellor of Washington State University -- Spokane.
