I-522 Label GMO foods

http://www.labelitwa.org/
labelitwa@gmail.com

I-522, “The People’s Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act,” is simple. The initiative would require food sold in retail outlets to be labeled if the ingredients are produced through genetic engineering. An estimated 70 percent of non-organic processed foods contain some ─ or several ─ genetically engineered ingredients.

Just like nutrition facts

Calorie and nutritional information was not always required on food labels, not until 1990. But it is required now and most consumers use this information every day.

Country-of-origin labeling wasn’t required until 2002. The trans fat content of foods didn’t have to be labeled until 2006. Now, all these labeling requirements are accepted as important for consumers.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also says we must know with labeling if our orange juice is from fresh or frozen. Doesn’t it make sense that genetically engineered foods containing experimental viral, bacterial, insect, plant or animal genes should be labeled, too?

Genetically engineered foods do not have to be tested for safety before entering the market. No long-term human feeding studies have been done. The research we have is raising serious questions about the impact to human health and the environment.

Thank you for volunteering! We are working to ensure that PCC and all of our business supporters have plenty of blank petitions available for volunteers to pick up. We'll check in with West Seattle PCC tomorrow to see if they need more sheets.

You can print a few of your own, the pdf and instructions are on the website at this link:
http://www.labelitwa.org/print_the_petition

Or we can send you some in the mail, just let us know how many you'd like.

Yes, we're working on getting I-522 at as many locations as possible (we have over 70 so far) and are adding new places of all types to the map everyday. We've got one political location so far that is a Democrat HQ in Ellensburg and hope to have many more soon.

Look forward to hearing from you,
Leah McManus

Sure wish it was going to be on the ballot for Nov...oh well, gives us more time to spread the word, I guess, to make sure it will pass next year. We definitely should get this done to have our food labels show us the truth about which, exactly, are GMO.
