Two Wash. Republican House members decry Trump's state of emergency
Two Republican members of Congress from Washington state have delivered pointed denunciations of President Donald Trump's declaration of a state of emergency to pay for his wall at the U.S.-Mexico border.
The toughest words came from Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., who has been the public face of Trump policies in the state.
"By circumventing Congress and Article 1 of the Constitution, President Trump is opening the door for any future President to act alone without Congressional approval," McMorris Rodgers said in a statement.
And she asked a question:
"If elected President, how would Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders use this precedent for a national disaster declaration to force the Green New Deal on the American people?"
Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Wash., added: "If President Obama had even hinted at using emergency powers in this way, I would have spoken out strongly against it and consistency demands that I do the same now."
