Seattle tunnel project subcontractor cited for not paying workers $370,000 in prevailing wages
While Bertha was drilling underground for the recently-opened SR-99 tunnel, Glacier Northwest was contracted by Seattle Tunnel Partners for an estimated $28 million to remove the dirt and other materials.
Workers at the former Mats Mats Quarry in Port Ludlow were owed prevailing wages for the work they contributed to the tunnel project, which included spreading about 2.2 million tons of dirt from the tunnel boring project, according to a news release from the Washington State Department of Labor and Industry (L&I).
The company was supposed to pay the 46 crane, skid steer loader, dump truck, bulldozer and excavator operators prevailing wages of $49.48 per hour because the project was publicly funded, L&I said. Workers were instead paid $27.69–$31.34 per hour.
The contract didn't allow dirt from any other project to be dumped, L&I said, which allowed them to determine how much work each employee did.
