Sawant uses out-of-state donors, leads in City Council fundraising
Seattle City Council incumbent Kshama Sawant warns supporters that "corporate PACs, big business lobbyists and developers" are coming after her, and has sworn off joining in the city's Democracy Voucher program that limits donations and campaign spending.
Yet, as City Council campaigns kick off, Sawant has at $50,948 raised more than any other incumbent or challenger.
Candidates participating in Democracy Vouchers cannot accept individual contributions higher than $250. Non-participants have a limit of $500. And $500 contributions, many from out-of-state, are flowing into Sawant's coffers.
Sawant has drawn $500 donors from New York, California, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Minnesota, Massachusetts, Georgia, Ohio and Texas. In 2015, she outspent opponent Pam Banks by about $100,000.
