How's traffic in the SR 99 tunnel? Up overall, but down at peak times

Just over two months after the State Route 99 tunnel opened, and the Washington State Department of Transportation is finally getting a better picture of how the tunnel is being used.

The tunnel opened in the middle of Seattle's "snowpacalypse," impacting SR-99 traffic even more than the final off-ramp construction was already slated to. More than 22,000 people still drove through the new 99 tunnel the day it opened — about 70,000 less than would've driven on the viaduct during a comparable (non-snowy) Monday.

Now, with a few more weeks of more-standard Seattle weather and traffic under their belts, WSDOT has released a clearer illustration around the SR-99 tunnel. For starters, traffic is increasing, week over week.

While early February saw just about 300,000 total trips between Monday and Friday, tunnel usage is now almost 500,000 in the same time period.
