Trump's tariff on Mexico goods 'rash, thoughtless' -- Rep. Schrier

President Donald Trump is "rash" and "thoughtless" in slapping a 5% tariff on imports from Mexico, in the words of Rep. Kim Schrier, D-Wash., a member of the House Agriculture Committee whose district includes the "apple capital of the world" Chelan County.

Trump has said the tariff will take effect on Monday, although it faces a revolt by usually supine Republican senators. Senior Mexican officials were in discussions with Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday afternoon.

Tariffs spark retaliation. Washington exported more than $2 billion worth of products to Mexico last year. An estimated one in 10 apples grown in Washington goes south of the border.

"President Trump's action to unilaterally tax good from Mexico is deeply misguided," Schrier said.

"Let's be clear that this reckless act (tariff) hurts both countries, alienates one of our biggest trading partners and friends, and jeopardizes trading relationships which our farmers and others rely on.

"As the only member from Washington on the Agriculture Committee, I have raised the harm of tariffs directly with (Agriculture) Secretary Perdue to make sure he is aware of how this will affect Washington and other agriculture-heavy states."
