My dad and I traveled from the heat and endless drought of Los Angeles to visit our wonderful country cousins in mostly Polk County over the long weekend. We'd like to congratulate you on your beautiful GREEN pastures and forests, cool clear air, a phenomenal lightning storm, most excellent cheese curds and gracious hospitality. Traveled also to Eau Claire where I went to grad school and am happy to report, despite the Walker TV ads, we saw quite a few BURKE yard signs.
We've come home refreshed and believing that Walker can not ever destroy all the natural beauty of the state, nor the can-do spirit of the Badger citizens. We're pulling for ya - more than ever!

(9,298 posts)But I have to tell you we had the BEST burrito ever at a place on Water Street....can't remember the name of it. You go down a line like at Subway to tailor make it. I thought I'd eat a whole one, but since it weighed several pounds, we had to split it. That with a couple of Spotted Cows and watching a beautiful rainstorm was a perfect late afternoon foray. Quiet on Labor Day, but I hadn't been back in years, and Eau Claire is looking good. Nice new bridge.

(9,298 posts)Living in L.A. for a long time, I've seen some fine Mexican food, but that burrito topped anything I've ever tasted. It wasn't there when I was going to school, and I'm kind of glad it wasn't or I would have turned into a real porker. Sitting there that afternoon and watching a lovely rainstorm was truly a highlight of the trip!
Thanks for the memory refresher....you must be much younger than me, Jackpine.

(9,298 posts)Still have pretty strong family/historical ties, so I should mention Labor Day evening. I insisted on treating the cousins to a buffet at the Turtle Lake Casino. Naturally, we did a little gambling first. Cousin Dale was playing the quarter machines, and after 20 minutes or so, I went over to check on him (he's 79). He had all these hundreds in his hand. I thought the crazy man had brought all that money with him, but he said at one point, the machine locked, a light went on at the top and a guy came over, pronounced him a winner and had him sign for receipt of $940! Dale was somewhat in quiet shock, but said, "You're not paying for dinner tonight - it's on the house."
Whatta hoot!
