The Siren Casts A Fond Farewell
Four years ago, when Scott Walker was elected for the first time, the Siren came to ferry Wisconsin progressives through the rough waters of GOP domination. 1,445 posts later, the Siren's job is complete.
We would have preferred to have bid you all a fond farewell with Mary Burke as our next Governor, but that result has eluded us. Whether fairly or unfairly, the world has gone mad. There is no doubt.
When a college drop-out with 6 friends and staff members found guilty of corruption wins against a Harvard graduate from a proud Wisconsin family with global name recognition - there is simply no amount of snark or cleverness to make sense of this reality.................

(12,754 posts)I know it's very chic to bash "old people" as being the cause of the problem, but if it is, then you're screwed. "Old people" is a renewable resource. As soon as one dies off, another takes his/her place. So, there will always be "old people." And guess what. Some day, the young people you idolize will be "old people." In fact, if you look at current demographics, there will soon be more old people than young people. Then what?
You may like to think that today's hip and progressive young people will remain that way, but the "old people" you scorn today were young, hip, and progressive during the '60s, when those same young people went out into the streets and actually did something -- instead of sitting home pecking away on computers and smartphones, thinking that they're changing the world by getting "likes" on their blog comments.
The Democrats lost because they had no message. "We're not quite as bad as the other guys" doesn't really get out the vote. You have to give people something to vote for.

(8,812 posts)I wouldn't be too smug if I were you.
An increasing number of young people are being led astray by Libertarians. Why? Because they've grown up with such a weak safety net that they don't fully appreciate how important New Deal policies were in creating the middle class and strengthening the country's infrastructure. In other words, they view the government as an encumbrance instead of an enabler of their success and stability.
On the other hand, older people can remember back to the days when the Democratic Party actually stood for things: labor unions, a vibrant middle class, and a strong safety net.
Unless we listen to our older Democratic voters and return to our core Democratic values, we run the risk of bringing up a generation that believes that the Democratic Party is irrelevant.
