Related: About this forumHoly Crap- there goes teacher education in Wisconsin!
And any person with relevant experience even a high school dropout could be licensed to teach in any other non-core academic subject in middle and high school, according to the provision that critics say would dramatically lower Wisconsin's teaching standards.
The teacher certification provision was approved as part of a package of K-12 budget items by the Legislature's Joint Finance Committee last week in a 1:30 a.m. vote, but it was backed by Rep. Mary Czaja (R-Irma). She said she pursued the measure to help rural schools find and retain qualified teachers in hard-to-fill subjects.

(6,409 posts)We can always rely on the Republicans to take a good idea and stretch it into absurdity. It would be fine to bring in various non-credentialed people to teach specialized subjects, but with some kind of oversight to make sure they stick to the curriculum. It's fine to let bachelor's degree teachers into the system, as long as they complete a master's degree within a certain period. That's the way it used to be in Wisconsin, and I had several fine teachers who were working on their advanced degrees. Obviously, the Republicans just want to weaken the teachers' union.

(45,274 posts)increase the pay scale? How 'bout letting them work off their school debts by teaching in underserved rural areas? (Not, mind you, that they should have any school debts in the first place.)
Oh, no, that would cost money. Instead, you turn a bunch of no doubt well-meaning but hopelessly underqualified people loose on our kids.
In my day, teachers had to know something about learning & instructional theory, human physical & psychological development, childhood psychopathology, etc. in addition to their subject areas. And the younger the kids are, the mre you need to know about kids & the less important the subject areas become.

All I need to finish my application for my Minnesota teaching license is my fingerprint card. Time to get out of this state because it only looks like it's going to get worse. The Mississippi of the north.

(3,974 posts)...then they clearly do not care about better schools and teachers. They never did. It's about undermining public schools and doing as they're told in the organized corporate takeover of education.
