As lawmaker readies proposal to allow guns in university buildings, opposition gears up
The Republican lawmaker who introduced a bill last year to allow concealed carry permit holders to bring guns inside university buildings says he will reintroduce the proposal in the Legislature’s upcoming session because he believes students are still at risk when they can’t bring weapons with them to campus.
But many of those students, as well as professors, university administrators and law enforcement officials, say the proposal from Rep. Jesse Kremer, R-Kewaskum, would make them less safe by letting people take guns into classrooms, faculty offices and other areas.
So before Kremer formally introduces his proposal a second time, opposition groups already have begun their efforts to lobby the public and legislators against the bill.
Permit holders have been allowed to bring concealed weapons onto the grounds of Wisconsin public universities and technical colleges since the state’s concealed carry law was passed in 2011, but the law allowed institutions to ban weapons within their buildings, which many — including UW-Madison — have done.
