B.C. Shelby: Scott Walker has no right to wear UW sweatshirt
Dear Editor: I was totally disgusted by the picture of Gov. Scott Walker wearing a University of Wisconsin sweatshirt with a sign on the podium that states "Moving Wisconsin Forward," which accompanies Lisa Pasque's article. I have no complaint about the article, just that the photo really riles me. As governor, Walker slashed the UW budget by millions while lambasting university staff and professors. He has no right to wear the name of what was one of the premier universities in the nation for academic standards, scientific research, and free open thought.
As to "Moving Wisconsin Forward," he and his cronies in the Legislature have done the complete opposite. They have trashed environmental protections, pushed to keep wages low to attract new companies, turned their backs on public education, let the state's infrastructure rot away (I remember when Wisconsin was hailed as having one of the best highway systems in the nation), and most recently mortgaged the state's future to the tune of $3 billion to lure a corporation known for paying low wages and having little concern for the environment.
We need an appropriate political cartoon to replace this photo.
