In matter of seconds, Republicans stall Gov. Tony Evers' move to postpone Tuesday election

MADISON - Get ready for the pandemic election.

Republicans stalled Gov. Tony Evers' move to push back Tuesday's election, quickly adjourning a special legislative session to deal with voting issues because of the coronavirus pandemic.

During Saturday's proceedings, the state Assembly and state Senate each gaveled in and out within seconds and recessed until Monday.

The move came as pressure mounted on the Democratic governor to act on his own by using emergency powers to block the election. A source close to Evers said the governor was reluctant to do that over concerns that a postponement would quickly be blocked by conservatives who control the state Supreme Court.

With only a few lawmakers present, the Legislature did not take up Evers' effort to extend the election date to May 19 and convert entirely to mail-in voting.

As the Legislature made its move, the virus remained unabated.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Wisconsin has more than doubled this week, climbing to over 2,000 on Saturday. Milwaukee County accounts for around half the cases.

Assembly Republicans are calling on Gov. Tony Evers to allow in-person services for Easter and Passover amid the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

"It is more important than ever that we allow Wisconsinites to observe their individual faiths," Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and the other members of the Assembly GOP caucus wrote in a Friday letter to Evers. "To that end, we ask that you work with Wisconsin churches and temples to allow them to hold Easter or Passover services, even if it's outside."

The request came one day before Republicans in the Assembly and Senate stalled Evers' move to push back Tuesday's election due to the coronavirus pandemic ravaging countries around the world. On Saturday, they quickly adjourned a special legislative session about the matter.

Easter is Sunday, April 12, while Passover begins April 8 and ends April 16.

The Archdiocese of Milwaukee has already canceled all in-person Holy Week and Easter Masses over concerns about the coronavirus pandemic. Archbishop Jerome Listecki will celebrate Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday Masses at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist and will livestream the services. A Spanish-language Easter Mass will also be livestreamed.

I know they cheat and lie. They lose ballots. They find ballots. Too many ballots. Not enough ballots.

But surely we have had enough of Kochsuckers. Please vote blue. Like we used to. Sigh.

I realize I’m preaching to the choir.
