RACINE - The city of Racine has a lost the breach of contract lawsuit brought by three unions.
Racine County Circuit Court Judge Gerald Ptacek has ruled that the city must honor the 2013-2014 contracts it approved with three of its unions in late 2010 and early 2011.
On July 17, the City Council voted to rescind prospective 2013-2014 contracts affecting 524 of the citys employees.City staff told aldermen that the wage and benefits provisions in the contracts, which were passed by the council in December 2010 and January and February of 2011, would create a $2 million deficit in the 2013 budget and the city couldnt raise taxes to pay for the provisions because of tax caps imposed by the state Legislature.
Two days later, three of the four unions affected by the vote AFSCME Local 67, the Racine Police Association and Racine Firefighters Local 321 of the International Association of Firefighters filed a lawsuit in Racine County Circuit Court asking that the contracts be upheld....
