A message from Kathleen Vinehout to Milwaukee-area DUers:
This is basically the only remaining station in Milwaukee that is oriented toward the African American community, so it's good to see her doing this show.

(3,577 posts)Sen. Vinehout responded very effectively to numerous excellent questions from the host and callers. On how this campaign will be different than the recall, she said people now better understand that the money in politics and gerrymandering are hurting our democracy. Last time many people felt it was unfair to recall Walker without giving him his full four years, and many in outlying areas like hers lacked information to understand the protests in Madison. (This is an important theme that she stresses: that voters in the northern and western parts of the state just don't get the same news about the issues. For example, many never heard about the fake Koch phone call to Walker. We have to realize this and make sure they get the information they need.)
A caller asked about her agenda for people of color regarding the problems of poverty and need for jobs. She said a huge part of this is related to their incarceration rate. A study showed that 70% of inmates had drug and alcohol dependencies and 30% had serious mental illness, and they aren't getting the treatment they need. She would work for a community-based system of proper treatment instead of long prison sentences for many of these people, like the program in Minnesota. She also addressed proposals for helping felons returning from prison and the problem that a review of sentences provided in the truth-in-sentencing law never happened.
A caller asked Vinehout about the "whispering campaign" against her. She answered this by saying it involves two themes: the idea that she has a poor record on reproductive rights (false, as explained in her FAQ at kathleenvinehout.org) and the idea that her district could be lost to Republicans if she runs for governor (she says the gerrymandering packed many more Democrats into her district).
The enthusiasm of the host and callers toward Kathleen Vinehout--including Sen. Lena Taylor, who stopped by the studio for a few minutes--was very encouraging to her supporters in this household. Here is a link to hear the interview (which starts after some other items).
