Wyoming man loses nearly $400K in online dating scam

GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) — A 40-year-old Wyoming man has lost nearly $400,000 in an online dating scam.

Police in Gillette say the man reported meeting the woman through an online dating site five years ago, but they never met in person.

Cpl. Dan Stroup tells the Gillette News Record the man reported he sent the woman more than $388,000 in March, purportedly for cancer treatment, and hasn't heard from her since.

Police are investigating, but Stroup says the money is likely unrecoverable.
