OTTAWA — Elizabeth May reclaimed her position as leader of the Green Party of Canada on Saturday night, with a plan to enter into a co-leadership arrangement with former human rights worker Jonathan Pedneault.

May won on the sixth ballot. Around 22,000 members were eligible to vote in this year’s race — a drop from the 32,000 members eligible to vote in the 2020 race that delivered a victory to embattled former leader Annamie Paul.

Both May and Pedneault ran on a joint ticket they hope will see them share equal power as leaders and usher in a new era of stability after more than a year of turmoil left the party buckling under allegations of discrimination, accusations of poor work culture and a flurry of resignations.

May and Pedneault pitched themselves throughout the campaign as the only contenders to combine both experience and fresh perspectives in their leadership bid.
