Johnston says no to public inquiry on foreign interference

David Johnston has recommended against calling a public inquiry into foreign interference in Canadian politics. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the government will follow that recommendation.
Johnston's decision comes after all opposition parties have called for an inquiry and after the government itself said it would support one — if Johnston recommended it.

While he isn't recommending a public inquiry, Johnston said in his report he did find "serious shortcomings in the way intelligence is communicated and processed from security agencies through to government."
Johnston said he'll continue his work as special rapporteur through to October by holding hearings to find ways to fix those shortcomings. He said he will produce a second report later this year.

Poilievre is only playing politics. He doesn't seriously want to get something useful done.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre's office says he is declining to meet with the government's special rapporteur on foreign interference because it is a "fake job" given to someone who is not impartial.
While the Prime Minister, NDP and Bloc Québécois leaders have all met with David Johnston as he determines whether the government should call a public inquiry into interference, Poilievre's office declined a meeting.
In an initial conversation with CBC News, a Poilievre spokesperson said Johnston's team had only offered a 48 hour window to meet, which did not fit the Conservative leader's schedule. In a statement issued hours later, director of media relations Sebastian Skamski expressed that Poilievre's refusal to meet was not because of scheduling.
