Jim, Jack, John, Joe, Leo, Leonard, Nick and Dorothy. Seven brothers and one sister from Lethbridge, Alta. all Schans, all enlisted in the military during the Second World War. No immediate family is believed to have contributed more soldiers to Canadas war effort.
I can't imagine the worry those parents must have gone through .. or maybe it was more reassuring believing they were together to take care of one another. I helped transcribe Canadian census indexes, linking them to WW records, it was amazing how many siblings in these large families went off to serve. My Grandfather and two of his brothers fought in WW1, in WW11, two Aunts and two Uncles from my Dad's immediate family all served. There are so few of them left now, it's great to see incredible stories like the Schan's.
