Support was highest in Quebec at 76 per cent and lowest in Alberta at 48 per cent.

The federal Liberals are currently at work on legislation to follow through on campaign commitments to tighten up restrictions on guns, though an earlier suggestion a new bill could be introduced before the end of the year now seems unlikely.

The Liberal plans don't involve any kind of total ban and, indeed, no political party has ever suggested the idea, noted Ekos president Frank Graves.

But widespread support for the concept suggests there's room to simply stop tinkering with existing gun laws and put in place something more ambitious, he said.

1. We're so different than the US regarding guns

E.g. when that shooting happened before the Congressional baseball game and Scalia was almost killed, as a Canadian my first thought was " well now those Repugnicans will see-the-light and not want guns around and maybe they'd clamp down on the NRA. I was shocked when it was stated that if they'd all had guns, the shooter could've been stopped sooner! We are just SO different on our outlook on guns. The U.S. allowing the release of 3D printer blueprints for guns is a really bad decision and one that wouldn't even have been contemplated here. Wowzers

2. Guns are a wedge issue in the US. Shootings get reasonable people all mad at guns,

the NRA says 'dems are coming for your guns', people hold on tighter to their guns, an election happens and poorer and lower middle class and middle class get out and vote republucan to keep their guns. Works every time because the issue of mass shootings is not solved and one always happens in the lead up to an election, or at least in the year before. And the dance repeats itself. Until Parkland and those great kids who have broadened their movement to include all kids. Interesting that in canada people are differentiating between rural and urban gun ownership from the getgo. In rural areas the police might be 20 to 45 minutes away or longer. So nobody is talking about banning their rifles and whatnot.
