SOD: RCI FINAL BROADCAST + MUSIC

It started as a radio service meant to keep Canadian troops in touch with the news from home. And yesterday, Radio Canada International -- the shortwave service of the CBC -- hit the radio airwaves for the final time.

As a result of federal cuts to the CBC budget, RCI is now an Internet-only service.

When it began in 1945, RCI was known as the Voice of Canada, bringing Canadian stories to the world. The service was provided in seven languages, including Chinese. But as an Internet-only provider, RCI will no longer be accessible to listeners in China.

Here's an excerpt of Friday's final broadcast of the RCI program, The Link, hosted by Mark Montgomery. It's our Sound of the Day.
