Thousands march in London to protest Donald Trump's state visit

Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Thousands of people marched through the streets of London to protest U.S. President Donald Trump's scheduled state visit.

An estimated 10,000 people marched from the U.S. embassy in London toward Downing street on Saturday to call for Prime Minister Theresa May to cancel the visit following Trump's travel order, The Guardian reported.

May invited Trump to London during a visit to the White House in January just before he signed an executive order restricting travel to the United States for refugees and immigrants of seven predominantly Muslim countries -- Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Sudan, Somalia and Yemen.

Protesters from groups such as Stop the War Coalition, Stand Up to Racism and the Muslim Association of Britain marched the streets, holding signs and chanting "Theresa May, shame on you," The Sky News.

I'm sure Her Maj will cope, as she's been trained to do, but I'd love to know if May was greeted with pursed lips when she returned.

Looks very much like an act of desperation on May's part – she really needs trade with the US, and if it means pandering to Trump's ego, she'll do it. But it also confirms my feeling that she's in above her head, because ... not really a great idea.

She'll be faced with huge protests when he arrives, and you never quite know what the Donald will come out with. I can just hear, "we have more rooms than this in Trump Tower". And after some of his comments on Kate's topless sunbathing, I don't think you'd want him anywhere near young female royals.

Think May has goofed big-time.

The whole thing is looking set to be a farce. A farce that will result in other countries being even more reluctant to invite the leader of the "free world" to do a state visit.

Who would want the security costs? The protests? The controversy? The bigotry? This Trump business is smelling worse every day.

who knows what he'll get up to?

I feel this presidency will only get worse, not better.

And you have to wonder about May's judgment.

Edit to add: I recall now that Trump once boasted he could have had sex with Diana if he'd wanted to - that will go down well with the royals.
