War on motorist a myth says left of centre think tank

The war on the motorist is a myth and fuel taxes should be raised without delay, a left of centre think tank has said in a report published today.

Pay as you drive road charging and congestion charging should also be widely implemented to raise funds for public transport, according to the Institute of Public Policy Research, which has close links to Labour.

It argues bus and rail passengers are being hit far harder than motorists because of the soaring cost of fares.

In June, against a backdrop of soaring petrol prices, George Osborne scrapped a 3p rise in fuel duty, as he bowed to pressure to protect families during the economic slowdown.

There are in fact two issues : environmental and government receipts. I recall reading that when the price of fuel reached a record high , March this year ?, government receipts fell due to reduced volume sales.

For the benefit of any of our cousins reading this the price of diesel here is currently just under $8 / US gallon.

... is recommending "pay as you drive road charging" when this is not only a major privacy
issue but also diverts money to private companies (as opposed to fuel tax & VED)?
