Margaret Thatcher 'totally on board' with National Conservatism conference

Monday’s gathering of conservatives in London began with an invocation of the spirit of Margaret Thatcher.

Opening the National Conservatism conference in Westminster’s Emmanuel Centre, chairman Christopher DeMuth said he had been “communing” with the late prime minister about the conference.

He told delegates: “I am happy to report that she is totally on board.”

I was sure this MUST be from Newsthump- but it's real.

And it's far from the nuttiest thing from this scary conference.

And one big thing that's come from this is how far from Thatcherism it all is. A lot of it's been fairly religious right in nature. Key themes have been claiming that the country is too full for any immigration whilst simultaneously bemoaning people not having any children.

Sad to say that my local MP (the useless Miriam Cates) opened the conference by getting into bother for what some considered coded antisemitism by railing against "cultural marxism". To be honest I don't think she was probably even aware of that stupid bit of rhetoric being an antisemitic trope. .

I must admit that I did guffaw when I saw Bill Cash referring to her as being "diligent" as Miriam Cates has got a reputation in Penistone and Stocksbridge as being the exact opposite! Especially when it comes to constituency matters. And I found the bit about the school run quite odd as it's an open secret round these parts that the other mums on the school run have ostracized Miriam Cates.

Cates, who is a former biology teacher, garnered interest and outrage for her opposition to extending rights to transgender people on the basis of self-identity, and backing moves to end a Covid-era law that allowed abortions pills to be sent to people at home.

Her work with the Common Sense Group, and co-founding the New Social Covenant Unit to promote family-friendly policies, have seen some label Cates an unashamed culture warrior.

As one of the “red wall” of northern Tories likely to be jittery about keeping their job at the next election given current polling, Cates is only likely to press harder for the Conservative party to embrace a socially conservative agenda in an attempt to save her seat.

But in doing so, she will alienate those colleagues already uncomfortable with her arguments. A senior Tory warned: “We don’t represent the values of modern people if we carry on down that route.”
