Cumbria hit by snow and ice travel chaos

A "major incident" incident has been declared in Cumbria after heavy snowfall, with police urging people not to travel on Sunday unless necessary.

Drivers in the area told the BBC they had been in stop-start traffic with no food or water for up to 19 hours.

Temperatures have also fallen below freezing in many other parts of the UK.

Yellow weather warnings for snow and ice have been extended over most of England - stretching from London all the way up to the Scottish border, with a fourth in place for Eastern England.

Police have declared a major incident in Cumbria, where some vehicle passengers have been forced to spend the night in shelters.

... I guess it doesn't take much snowfall to cripple commerce in Britain. They wouldn't fare too well here in Vermont! Judging by the accompanying photos, that much snow hereabouts is called Just Another Minor Annoyance to Slow the Commute a Bit. I don't mean to diminish their plight, but don't they sell snow tires there? Tyres with a "Y", of course.
But then, even we Vermonters are in awe of what those in northern Japan deal with as a matter of course. They get roadside snowbanks several buses tall! No joke! Sukayu Onsen gets an average snowfall of 58 feet per season!

It's all a matter of perspective, I guess.
