Lady Warsi is to warn of what she calls the "militant secularisation" of society and propose Christianity is given a central role in public life when she leads a high-level government delegation on an official visit to the pope.In a speech on Tuesday she will say: "My fear is that, today, militant secularisation is taking hold of our societies. We see it in a number of things: when signs of religion cannot be displayed or worn in government buildings, and where religion is sidelined and downgraded in the public sphere.
"For me one of the most worrying aspects about this militant secularisation is that at its core and in its instincts it is deeply intolerant. It demonstrates similar traits to totalitarian regimes denying people the right to a religious identity because they were frightened of the concept of multiple identities."

Not exactly blessed with a sense of irony, is she.

(46,122 posts)I don't suppose that the British equivalent of Sarah Palin wants their religion to be incorporated into public life, equal with Protestantism and Catholicism.

Completely unlike the world's religions, which are SOOOOOOO inclusive in their acceptance of the beliefs of others. Do these people ever read or listen to the stuff that comes out of their mouths?
Wanna' talk about "intolerance"? There's enough intolerance in the world's religions to completely dwarf that of any secularists.

(41,208 posts)Here is a short British history quiz:
(1) Which British Prime Minister was described as "a man whose life reflects a genial paganism, who regarded all creeds with the impartiality of indifference, and who looked upon all religion as a local accident and as the result of hereditary influences" ... "a sceptic as regards religion"?
(2) Which bishop lamented that in England "Morality and religion have collapsed to a degree that has never been known in any Christian country"? And when?
(3) Which Prime Minister was described as follows: " He) appeared to have no religious status. Looking over his life, there was no sign that he was a Christian. He appeared to believe in God, but it all ends there. As far as can be deciphered, (he) showed no interest in religion until (a colleague's) conversion. But even after that, all records have shown he had no interest in God or Jesus at all."
(4) Which Prime Minister stated that 'Too much religion of any kind is a bad thing'?
(5) Which Prime Minister stated 'I believe in the ethics of Christianity. Can't believe in the mumbo-jumbo'?
