Former armed forces personnel without degrees will be fast-tracked into teaching in England under a new government programme.
The Troops to Teachers scheme will help "highly skilled" former military personnel become teachers within two years.
Education Minister David Laws said ex-members of "our inspiring armed forces" could make great teachers.
Teaching unions doubted whether two years' training would be enough.

Fighting Taliban will not prepare you for teenagers, teachers warn former troops.
Education Secretary Michael Goves plan to use former troops as teachers has prompted education professionals to warn soldiers that no amount of front-line experience can prepare your for dealing with a British teenager.
The plan is part of an overhaul of teacher training which Gove believes will improve the standards of teaching across the country, whilst improving discipline in the classroom.
However many teachers have warned that the plans could lead to classrooms being run by massively unprepared former soldiers, who are unlikely to have faced an enemy as resourceful as a modern schoolchild.
Teacher Hilary Broughton told us, British teenagers are resourceful and cunning, and although outwardly they appear to be mostly ********, they actually have a better grasp of the rules surrounding what powers teachers actually have than most PTA members.

What the heck are these people going to teach? English, Geography, Maths?
I've got no doubt there are some truly outstanding individuals who can and will become outstanding teachers. But with a jackass course?
This is a dreadful idea. Gove seems to be in a competition with himself to come up with really bad ideas.

(14,739 posts)...Yes many ex servicemen would make excellent teachers, and I certainly think more needs to be done for military personell when they leave the armed forces.
However, giving ex servicement inferior training to everyone else makes it a recipe for disaster. Perhaps they are doing this in the hope that ex servicement fast-tracked like this won't be offered the same wages as properly trained teachers?
