http://www.leftfootforward.org/2014/07/the-modern-day-norman-tebbit-is-now-a-treasury-minister-be-afraid/To be fair, I don't think it's a very important post. But Priti Patel is one serious right-winger. Apart from what's mentioned in the article, she was one of the few MPs (I think Bill Cash may have been the only other one) at Nigel Farage's pro-cuts demo a couple of years ago.
(Edited because I'd amalgamated two different Tea Party-type events; the one she attended was Farage's, not Hannan's.)

(20,805 posts)1. How does that happen...??
Does she or her family have money, because I can think of no good reason on earth why someone named Priti Patel would think or say those things...?

(41,205 posts)2. I don't see any good reason why someone from a working-class background would grow up to be Tebbit..
but he did.
Patel's parents were small shopkeepers. But, despite being immigrants and not rich, the family seem generally RW. Her father stood as a UKIP candidate for the Hertfordshire county council last year. All very Thatcher-ish really.

I don't think she's as socially conservative/bigoted as Tebbit, but she does come across as something of a monetarist idealogue, as if she's swallowed the entire works of Milton Friedman whole.
