Football - London favourite as UEFA to announce Euro 2020 hosts

The long wait to find out who will host the 2020 European Championship – the first time the event will be held in 13 countries simultaneously – ends on Friday when UEFA meet in Geneva, Switzerland.

European football's governing body will have to pick from 19 candidates, stretching from Israel and Spain to Azerbaijan and Wales.

But London's Wembley already looks the odds-on favourite to host the semi-finals and final, after German officials hinted they might leave the 2020 event to England and focus on a bid to host Euro 2024 instead.

Wembley has been named as the host for the semi-finals and final of the Euro 2020 tournament with the Football Association vowing that an England side will be there to play in them.

Uefa president Michel Platini confirmed that Wembley had been awarded the so-called “finals package” after the German FA, their only rivals, said they were more interested in hosting Euro 2024 in its entirety.

Dublin’s Aviva Stadium and Scotland’s Hampden Park will both host four matches each – three group stage games and a round of 16 fixture. But there was disappointment for the Welsh FA after the Millennium Stadium missed out.
