Did you recently upgrade/install new browser software? Most recent browser upgrades "keep" your existing bookmarks so losing them would be weird.
How about new programs? Have you installed anything new? Was it freeware? Is it possible that the new program(s) bundled some browser hijack thing like a toolbar?
As for what to do right now, I advise installing and running CCleaner Free Version. When you run it, make sure to run the Cleaner/Windows Tab after ticking all the boxes except Wipe Free Space, only because including that option takes forever. Also tick all the boxes under the Applications Tab and run that.
Warning - this will erase all your cookies so you will have to log in again to all the sites where you are signed up.
Then click the Registry Tab, click all the boxes and run the Scan for Issues button. After the software has located all those issues, click the button that reads: Fix Selected Issues. CCLeaner, pre-selects all the issues found in the scan but I've never had any trouble getting rid of them. When you click the Fix Selected Issues button, the program asks you if you want to save a log file of your session. I always do and I save it in the CCleaner folder.
After you've fixed the registry issues, close the dialogue box, close the program. Shut down your computer, count to ten and then power it back on.
If that doesn't help you, then let us know here.
