I'm hoping someone can help me with my confusing inability to see pictures or videos posted on DU.
This does happen on other sites, but mostly here. I'm currently running Firefox version 10.0.2. I'm using Adblock plus, and have disabled some add-ons, including greasemonkey & noscript.
I've used Mozilla/Firefox for so long that I'm wary of changing browsers, although I'll try anything but IE.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

(27,677 posts)it's possible that you have some domains blacklisted that shouldn't be. Is it all images or just some? For example, can you see the following:

(8,380 posts)I'll check adblock, though. Thanks!

(14,478 posts)A thought that occurs is you've lost the ability to show certain types - say, flash video and PNG images. Which would be weird, but fixable.
Another thing to test would be to open the pages in a different browser (such as Internet Explorer or Chrome) and see if they show up then...
Here's a thread where there's obviously a video, but I can only see white space:

Same with this:

I am, however, now able to see pictures, like the one posted above. Also, I have no problem seeing videos posted directly on Youtube.
Thanks again!

(14,478 posts)Copy this into your address bar, and edit out the 'XXX' in the middle
www.youtube.comXXX/watch?v=anSQtsuX6HE
hit enter and see if it works (It's the Springstein video you gave as an example, but not embedded this way)
Also, go to http://www.rcrt.co.uk/onlinetools/browsers/javascripttester.jsp to see if your javascript is working...
edit: also, try http://www.chemgapedia.de/vsengine/info/en/help/requirements/flash.html and see if flash video is working OK (It's complicated on youtube)

(8,380 posts)and yes, the flash video is working.
I do not have java 3D (don't really know if I need it).
This is perplexing! Thank you for your info and assistance

(14,478 posts)...cause I'm stumped.
Putting myself on the same setup to see if I can replicate it - it should work OK...

(14,478 posts)could you :
Come out of firefox and wait a minute
goto start - run, and enter "firefox -safe-mode" without the quotes. You should get something like this:
untick the 'bookmarks' option, and tick 'disable all add-ons': then continue
When it comes up, try a video
If it's still buggered, go to edit - preferences - advanced and hit 'clear now' next to 'offline files', and try again...
Fingers crossed.

(8,380 posts)NOW what do I do? Should I just disable the add ons? Thanks!!
Dead_Parrot
(14,478 posts)...I've just noticed I gave you the wrong instruction above. Got to tools - add-ons and if see if they have 'enable' or disable' as an option: I should have told you above to restart (which would disable them), but I told you to continue (which leaves them on).
(edit: maybe. This has changed a little since I last did it, restart firefox normally to be sure)
If they all say 'Disable', they're running and you are OK (The restart/cache clear has sorted it). just carry on as normal.
If they all say 'Enable', they are not running but we can switch them on one by one to see which is a problem...

(8,380 posts)It appears that it's Google Disconnect 2.3.0 that's causing the problem.
I disabled everything, then just disabled Google Disconnect and enabled everything else. Videos appear as they should. Now, why it causes the problem, I don't know.
I appreciate your help and your willingness to walk me through problem-solving. Very kind of you!

(14,478 posts)No idea why disconnect would have that effect, but so long as it's working...
Of course, everybody can see you now.
