I'm having a problem with a HP laptop running WIN 7

I was just replying to a post on DU when I bumped the computer a little bit. Somehow, it went into safemode. I tried to re-start to get out of safe-mode and then msn took over with configuring updates. I let it go until I noticed that it was 100% complete for over an hour. My roommate suggested turning it off and then turning it on again. Now it says 35% complete for the past 30 minutes. What can I do?

1. do you know how to get into safe mode, and do you have the Windows 7 disc handy ?

As the poster below me said, you can leave it alone for a few hours and hope it completes the update.

If not, then we'll go to the next step.

3. I don't have the WIN7 disc, but I do have a backup on a thumbdrive from about a year ago.

I'll have to turn the computer off and then back on again to get into safemode, won't I?

6. let's take the safest method first, just leave the laptop alone for a few hours

Yes, to get into safemode, you have to reboot and then start tapping the F8 key quickly to force it into the selection screen where you can pick Safe Mode.

First, just leave it alone and hopefully it will complete the update. I'm a bit pessimistic but I've been wrong before.

When it is eventually fixed turn off automatic updates so that you can do updates when you want to.

4. Do you think it will fix itself?

I'm using my Surface 3 at the moment, but I don't care for it with reading and writing text on the DU. This computer is mostly for my art work.

7. If you reboot, but you are still stuck, there is a chance you could revert

to a state before the updates were installed; this "chance" depends however, on whether or not you have "System restore" enabled.

So, first I'd wait and see if updates complete (it really depends on what the updates were - and how fast your laptop is). If after 20-30 minutes it is still "stuck", I'd reboot using the below guide...

The below link explains system restore. Look about half-way down the page for the section:
"But wait, what if Windows 7 won’t boot? How do I access system restore?"

11. I would just shut it down and then restart.

If worse comes to worse, restart and repeatedly hit F8 key to get back into safe mode and try a system restore. That is once in safe mode go to Start and type in System Restore and hit enter then select a point before the problem.

It fixed itself by simply leaving it alone! Whew! I'm here on the laptop now, typing this. Lunch and binge-watching a few TV episodes gave it enough time to fix itself! Thank you all again!
