Need techie help

Our condo currently has xfinity internet as part of our fees. The board wants to change to Hotwire communications. Our current plan has 2.4 GBz/5GBz. The new one promises 100MB. Totally unschooled on these tech terms, so should I protest or will it be ok? Thank you

Those figures you quoted 2.4 etc are the WIRELESS speed. Kinda irrelevant. CurtEastPoint Aug 2017 #3

Hundred megs is kinda slow these days. You'll notice. But if it's a lot cheaper, maybe it's what people want.

Never had Xfinity.

Is 2.4 GBz/5GBz a typo that should be 2.4 GHz/5GHz? That would be the wifi radio frequency. Also 100MB, should that be 100Mbps, a speed rating for some ethernet cables and components?

Find out what the DOWNLOAD SPEED is that you now have for xfinity. Probably something like 20 or 50 mbps (megabits per second). That is the standard measurement unit.

If you have less than 100 and they are going to offer 100, then that's pretty good. Providing it doesn't cost you more!

PS: MB is megabytes and is a measurement of disk space.

they're the radio frequency bands that wireless uses. Wireless speeds vary depending not only on the the type (802.11 a/b/g/n), but also your distance from the wireless access point (WAP) & the amount and kind of material the signal has to pass through. Additionally, the number of people using the WAP is going to affect your speed. Probably the best thing to do is to use speedtest.net web site to measure the ping, upload, and download speeds. Do this during various times of day for a week and get the min, max, and average.

You would only be getting about 4% of your current speed. Math: 0.1Ghz/s divided by 2.4Ghz/s = 0.042 => approx. 4%.

Depends on what you're using it for. Probably for regular internet surfing, 100MHz/s is fine, but if you are using it for video streaming via WiFi, maybe not. Perhaps some of the networking techies could reflect on that.

Are they reducing your condo fees accordingly?

But internet service wasn't included. Thanks folks. After seeing your comments and reading awful reviews, think I'm going to bitch to high heaven

Need to know the speed of the current service the numbers you gave for your current service is the wireless frequencies supported not the speed they are delivering. ..

The 100mb is the speed of the new service. So need to know what the old service had as a speed to compare.

Without apples to apples comparison there is no way to give you feedback.

There are also other things to consider is that 100mb shared or is that what they are promising to each condo...

Lots of other questions. Very hard to say which would be better without a lot more info.
