Windows will not load
Hello! I am not terribly computer literate. Coming up on close to 60yo I came up before all this wonderful stuff and I am still learning. I really need some help.
I turned on my computer last night and windows does not load. I get a black screen asking me to either pick last known good configuration or normal start neither
of which work. I have windows xp and chrome. Is there a reset button or procedure or does this need to go to this shop? Thank you so very much for any advice!

(3,894 posts)mentioning a restore option. I think it's usually saying to push F8 or something. Do that, and try to restore to a time when you're pretty sure it worked.

(3,894 posts)If it won't start in safe mode and you don't know how to read the screen options, it's best to get help.
Each computer system might have a different Fx for that restore screen. Clearly you read my post and hit F8 without actually reading the correct Fx key for your machine. If you can't even do that, you need to stop and get qualified help.

(37,540 posts)If that doesn't work and you have the XP O/S cd, try resetting the 1st boot option to CDROM and load XP...I think once that boots itself, it will see a copy on the hard drive and prompt you if you want to repair the XP software on the hard-drive.

(2 posts)Read out the post & found every possible way is not worked for you - seems you need reinstall the Windows. Here is the process
find out a Windows XP / 7 setup cd
Keep tapping "delete / Del" key on start up ---> it will lead you to BIOS / BOOT MENU --> Search an option called "Boot Options" or "Advanced Boot Options" or "Advanced Boot Management" ---> search for "1st Boot Device" or "Boot Device Priority" --> Hit enter & change it to "CD/DVD ROM or Writer" ---> Hit F10 key on the top of keyboard ---> place the windows setup CD on your DVD Drive ---> hit enter (ok) on the message displayed on your screen (save setup & exit)...
now follow the onscreen instruction carefuly for the setup, its easy if you read it properly, all of the instruction are given step by step on your screen.

when the above option come on screen choose the
hdd:pm-samsung hd321kj option & immediately keep tapping F8 key again & it will lead you to Safe Mode option.
Choose the Safe Mode with Networking option ----> it will load the basic drivers ---> a pop up will come up, do it "Yes" ---> it will lead you to screen with your computer icons & black background.
in the Safe mode run this 2 software & reboot it when finish.

(3,554 posts)Please supply the make (ex: Dell, HP, Gateway, Sony...etc) and model # (ex: Inspiron 2200, HP Pavilion ####, Sony Vaio ###...etc) so we can dig up the manufacturer's manuals, instrux, etc... there's plenty of good people here who can walk you through the step by steps, this shotgun approach could produce DISASTROUS results if applied to the wrong system.
While the advice given above is for the most part good sound advice I agree with DUer Lionessa, bring it to Staples--they're good and reasonably priced. What you (admittedly) don't know computer tech savvy wise can hurt you a whole lot.

(16,020 posts)it had no brand name make cause the shop built it. There was some sort of burned out area if that makes any sense. My husband reported back to me with this description so it probably is not accurate. They are building me a new faster and more pumped up computer. It was fixable but it ends up cheaper to just upgrade it. Thanks so much.
