What's a good cleanup utility/registry fixer for Windows XP ?
i.e. one with a good, reliable repuation, and minimum entanglements associated with licensing etc.? Oh, and it has to be free.
I need to find any "orphan" D/Ls and temp files and free up some disk space.
(Do I really need all this junk to run Windows? Microsoft .NET framework 2.0, 3.0, 4 ... MS Silverlight ... MSXML 4.0 sp2 (3 files with strange numbers) ... ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX extensions ? These don't sound like anything I'm aware of using. )

http://www.piriform.com/CCLEANERI'm no computer expert, but it seems to work well and cleans up lots of junk. Its free, simple to use and has a bunch of useful tools and settings. Its never screwed anything up either.

(3,655 posts)CCleaner is very useful. I use it quite often to shut down all those auto start update programs.

(37,457 posts)I've used it before and it seemed to do the job.
I've used this to clean up the Registry after manually removing programs that do not want to be removed.
I never messed with the setup or defaults. Install, update and go. I have never had a problem with it.

(3,554 posts)...are generally useless and potentially dangerous programs. Their benefit(s)--if any--is/are negligible at best and catastophic at worst. Any of the aforementioned utilities are good--I use CCleaner & TFC by OldTimer @ Geeks to Go.

(3,655 posts)is that when you clean the registry, it gives you the option of backing up the changes before you make them.
