OK, wise computer people, before I drag my butt to Best Buy for tech support...

maybe one of you knows what is happening. Bought a Toshiba 755 about three months ago. Got a little freaked out the first time the screen went blank but it was because if you move the laptop, there's something built in to protect the hard drive. A little message appeared when this happened. As soon as you are still again, the screen comes back.

A couple of times, maybe twice or so, the computer shut itself off completely. I also noticed I would shut the computer down, leave it, return and the computer would turn on as soon as I opened it without pressing anything to turn it on. I wondered if maybe I had not shut down properly?

Tuesday, after leaving the computer off all night, I got to work and the computer would not stay on. Pressed the power button, it would attempt to start and then pop off. Tried a few times and it kept shutting off. It was plugged in the entire time. I started it in safe mode and the computer checked some files and found nothing wrong. After another couple of tries, it stayed on and everything worked fine. Around 6:30 pm it shut itself off and would not come back. I use a cooling fan all the time so i don't think it was overheated. I gave up with work and came home.

Repeat yesterday morning. I used my phone to record what happened and saw it shut off and turn itself back on and then shut off. What I noticed yesterday was the battery light in the front was red. However, it was plugged into the power source. I was able to get it to stay on and do a backup and virus scan. Called Best Buy and I can take it in but I know that will be a boatload of time. Last night I left it plugged in all night and this morning the battery light is white.

Bum battery? Bum charger? How will they check this if the computer is working fine now?

I called Toshiba and they want to do a system restore.

Do I have a lemon? Any thoughts?

When you recorded with your phone... how long did it stay on, stay shut off, turn on again, etc (i.e., do you have a timeline)? When it turned back on, did it do the normal startup thing as if you were turning it on from scratch?

When you left it plugged in last night, was the computer turned on or off?

One test I would try would be to run plugged in but with the battery removed. See if it stays running indefinitely when you do that. If it does, this may indicate that you have a defective battery (or less likely, a defective charger). If it remains intermittent, it's likely a problem with the internal power supply (not the plug-in brick).

The video from start to finish is 2:29. I record about 20 seconds before the screen appears asking for safe mode. It stays on while I am recording which lights are on. It lets me pull up the google home page. It goes off at 2:17.

Yes, the computer was plugged in last night.

I will run the test without the battery now.

THANK YOU!!!

No battery in. I'm going to leave it on for a while and see what happens. Lunch time here anyway.

since you covered that. Try without the battery, but make sure you get the base problem fixed before it goes off warranty.

6. Power supply, battery problem.

Both can be replaced at relatively low cost. My guess is that the power supply or possibly the connection from the power supply to the system board is broken, breaking, and that the battery is frequently fully discharged, causing a low power shut down even with the system plugged in, as the power supply is not functional. Replace the power supply. Forget best buy unless you already paid for their crappy service plan. If it is the connection from the power supply to the system board, you need a new mother board and you either need the manufacturer warranty to replace it or you need a new laptop.

I had no problems all day yesterday. None this morning so far.

The frustrating part is not knowing when it might happen again!

they replaced the power supply, mother board and the hard drive. When I went to pick it up, their computers were down so I couldn't pick it up. This was turning into a comedy of errors.

Once I got it back, the only difference I noticed is that the very sensitive hard disk protection freeze is no longer there.

I had to buy a new laptop anyway because I could not go another day without getting my work done. My husband has decided he needs a backup computer so we'll keep this brand new, newly refurbished Toshiba for that purpose.

generally I don't bother with attempting to repair systems I didn't build myself, as the service experience is always unfortunate, plus if the system is for work I can write off the expense of replacement, and anyway I like new toys. Replacing gets you newer faster and frequently substantially less expensive equipment.
